Some of the things we use Big Data for :
- We use weather information to predict dengue outbreak in Malaysia
- We use weather information to model the flood and estimate the probability of flood.
For example, two years ago when a flood hit our East Coast, we had very little information to model the flood. So the Malaysian government decided that we should put more sensors to detect the flood. However, it seemed unnecessary after a year.
The solution was that the government worked together with TNB (Tenaga National Berhad) to detect floods. Each time there was an area that went through a power cut, it was most likely it is flooded due to the power station being affected by the water. So the information from the Weather Department and the electrical company was able to provide a good prediction of a flood in a certain area.
Real world big data applications
Earthquake detection and prediction
When we use the traditional machine and sensors detectors for this purpose, it is also less effective. In this case, social media comes in handy. Often people tend to report an earthquake on social medias such as Twitter or Facebook.
Hence, for earthquake detection and prediction, we use Big Data Analytics in social media much more as compared to using it on the sensors.

- They study the area for information such as the crime rates to predict crime occurrence.
- Combine IOT and Data Science to monitor for early Parkinson disease detection.
You can monitor a person’s behavior, the occurrence of certain vital statistics etc, in order to tell if they have early stages of Parkinson or not.
