1. Comprehensive
Understand Big Data challenges such as Volume, Variety, and Velocity (this will be further discussed later).
2. Integrated
Enable integration with existing information architecture including databases, warehouses, and BI (Business Intelligence) applications, such as Teradata, Tableau, etc.
3. Scalability
The design of your Big Data solution has to be ready for scaling to petabytes without too much redesign and hassles. This is also where Hadoop comes in to play its role. One thing to remember is that storage has to become very cost efficient in order to store as many data as possible, whether they are important or not. You need to make sure your solution is able to be scaled up.
At this moment, the needs for the ability of the solution to be scaled is more important than its efficiency in processing. This is because processing power is much higher than the past, so you do not have to worry about those issues.
4. Extensible
The solution is extensible to accommodate newer technologies to be introduced. This is a useful aspect to look at before you purchase your Big Data solution. This is going to be useful if you plan on expanding your company, for example to more departments, and you would like to have new technologies coming in that can be integrated with your current production line.
This is because data does not only comes from your laptops, mobile devices etc. It also comes from all components that can be tracked or sensed, such as your IOT (Internet of Things) devices.
5. Minimum Maintenance
Because it is already so complex, it should be fault tolerance and allows individual hardware to be upgraded or replaced. With storage being more affordable, it will be helpful that if anything that happens to any part, you can just replace the specific part individually.These are the characteristics of Big Data platform. The technology itself is ever changing. There will always be newer technologies and components that are coming up, that will be able to help you do things better. Those are known as tools.
